Man Garners Drug Charges In Wake Of Single Vehicle Crash
A local man garnered a number of drug charges after authorities were summoned to the scene of a crash where a vehicle had come to rest atop a scooter Saturday.
When they arrived at the West Taylor Street location, officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department report that driver Thomas Tyler Owens, 21, of 4089 Weakley Creek Road, appeared to be under the influence of some type of intoxicant.
Owens told officers that he had been traveling southbound on South Mahr Avenue when his brakes failed. He said that his vehicle traveled past the stop sign, through the intersection, onto a curb, up a grass embankment, went air born, and landed atop a scooter, trailer and lawn mower. The scooter, valued $1,500, was damaged in the crash.
Officers report that Owens failed to perform satisfactorily when field sobriety tests were administered. He told officers he had taken several 800 mg ibuprofen tablets prior to the crash.
Owens was placed under arrest at that time on a charge of first offense DUI. During a subsequent search of his vehicle officers reported finding numerous items associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine.
Plastic bags, tubing, rubber gloves, pipe cutters, Coleman fuel, a lithium battery that had been cut open, used syringes, brake fluid, starter fluid, alcohol, scales, electrical tape, a plastic gas can and a Gatorade bottle were all seized into evidence.
In addition, officers reported finding a hidden compartment inside the chrome gear shifter. Inside, they found a single 800 mg ibuprofen pill.
Owens was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was booked under charges that include first offense DUI, possession of a legend drug without a prescription, promotion of the manufacture of meth, initiation of the process to manufacture meth, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He will be required to answer the charges in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on April 5, 2013.
